Rather ve Sooner zarf sözcükleri (adverbials) HAD ve WOULD yardımcıları ile birleşerek yeni bir sözcük oluştururlar:
WOULD RATHER/HAD RATHER WOULD, SOONER/HAD SOONER bir tercih ifade ederler. Konuşan kimsenin tercihini bildirirler.
Example:
1 — I would rather play football than sit here. (If I had a choise.)
(Futbol oynamayı burada oturmaya tercih . ederdim.) (Eğer seçme şansım olsaydı.)
2 — Would you like some milk? I would rather drink water.
(Biraz süt arzu eder misiniz? Hayır su içmeyi tercih ederim. )
Geçmiş tercihi göstermek için
WOULD RATHER (SOONER) + HAVE + VERB (3. form) biçimi kullanılır.
Example:
1 — I would rather have played football than play basketball.
(Futbol oynamayı basketbol oynamaya tercih ederdim.)
2 — She would rather have stayed at home than go to such a terrible restaurant.
(Evde kalmayı böyle berbat bir lokantaya gitmeye tercih ederdi.)
WOULD SOONER’da tercih ifade eder ve WOULD RATHER ile yer değiştirebilir.
Example:
1— I would sooner drink water than milk.
(Su içmeyi, süt içmeye tercih ederim.)
2 — I would sooner play than eat.
(Oyunu yemeğe tercih ederim.)
3 — I would sooner have drunk ink than the mix.
