SHOULD ile eşanlamlıdır. Yapılması zorunlu olmayan bir gereklilik veya tavsiye göstermek için kullanılır (escapable obligation – advisability). Soru biçimi çok seyrek kullanılır. Sorularda SHOULD tercih edilir.
Example:
Ought we to buy a present for him? yerine
Should we buy a present for him?
(Ona bir hediye almamız gerekiyor mu?) biçimi kullanılır.
Olumsuz biçimi OUGHT NOT TO pek kısaltılmaz.
— I ought not to go out today.
— I shouldn’t go out today.
— I should say nothing.
— I ought to say nothing.
— I ought to study more.
— I should study more.
Geçmiş zaman biçimi SHOULD’ta olduğu gibi yerine getirilmemiş bir gerekliliği gösterir, .Olumsuz cümlelerde ise yapılmaması gerektiği halde yapılmış bir işi ifade eder.
OUGHT TO + HAVE + VERB (3. form)
Example:
1 — You failed. You ought to have studied more.
(Başaramadınız. Daha çok çalışmanız gerekirdi.)
2 — You ought not to have wasted your time.
(Zamanınızı boşa harcamamanız gerekirdi.
Soru cümleleri de SHOULD gibi iki farklı yanıt ararlar:
a) Yapılması gerekli olmayan bir işi sorarlar.
b) Yapılmaması gerekli olan bir işi sorarlar.
Example:
Ought we to wait for him any more?
(Onu daha fazla beklememiz gerekiyor mu?)
a) No. we needn’t. He said he wouldn’t come after this hour.
(Hayır gerekmez. Bu saatten sonra gelmeyeceği, ni söyledi.)
b) No, we ought not to. We shall miss the train. (Hayır, beklemememiz gerekiyor. Treni kaçıracağız.)
